First of all, the game never uses She or He pronouns for Frisk or Chara. The game uses They, and you might think it’s so you can relate to Frisk and Chara more. After all, you gave them your name! And in video games world, it means that they’re you! So if you use She pronouns, bam, it means Frisk has She pronouns as well. Since they’re you, duh.
Well, as we all know, that’s wrong. We learn at the end of pacifist that whatever name you gave your character isn’t ACTUALLY the name of the character you’ve been controlling thus far, and they’re revealed to be called Frisk. An important part of the Pacifist ending is realizing that Frisk is their own person, and not actually a representation of the player! So, bam, one character that isn’t actually you. So, too bad, can’t use She for Frisk after all.
BUT WAIT! CHARA IS ME!!! I ACTUALLY GAVE THEM MY NAME!!! SO SINCE I USE HE PRONOUNS, THEY USE HE PRONOUNS AS WELL!!!
Well, again, false. It’s shown at the end of No Mercy that Chara is also a whole different person than You, the player, since Chara addresses you specifically.
See the pattern here? You’re not either of those characters. Your pronouns don’t apply to them. The game is all about subverting your expectations about video game tropes. Saving is part of the plot. You can be hurt by the game interface. Save Scumming is acknowledged by the game. The character you’re controlling isn’t meant to be a representation of you, the player, but they are actually their own person. And they are always, through the whole game, both referred to as “They”. Check the game if you don’t believe me, come on. If the game really wanted you to choose whether your character is a girl or a boy… they would’ve let you do that. Pokemon style.
Not referring to those two characters as They isn’t some SJW bullshit, it’s non-binary erasure. Would you do that to a woman character? Let’s take Chell, from Portal. She never speaks, you rarely see her since it’s a 1st person game, but Glados keeps using she pronouns for her. Why would you use He pronouns for Chell when the game keeps using She? That’s… pretty much what you’re doing if you use He or She for Chara and Frisk, here. Why is it suddenly okay to use He or She pronouns for a character that uses They?
